Fresno Station Groundbreaking
Was Held March 23
Reported by Bruce Jenkins

We kicked off the Fresno Station restoration with a celebration of speeches, shovel turning and refreshments. State Senator Jim Costa was the MC. He gave a brief history of the old (1899) Santa Fe Station and gave credits to the city, state, Amtrak and BNSF. He introduced a body of speakers e.g.: Fresno Mayor Autry, Warren Weber (Caltrans Department of Rail), Joe Deely (Amtrak), Art Lloyd (SJVRC) and aides who spoke briefly for their respective Senators and Assembly Persons including US Senator Barbara Boxer. A fair quantity of local media were also present. Refreshments were generously supplied by Caltrans and served by Marguerite Monahan and Chuck Whittig. The affair drew a respectable crowd and was only interrupted once, by an eastbound BNSF freight.
For more details about the station, see the March printed Western Rail Passenger Review.
