RailPAC is working with Caltrans and all the agencies involved in achieving the following goals for expanding and extending rail passenger service. We support adequate funding for these services and vigorous promotion of them so they may achieve economic stability. (see map below)

  • Expansion of the existing intercity routes within the state of California
    1. Surfliner Route: Increase frequency to hourly service, add additional service to Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, and reduce the running time.
    2. Capitol Corridor: Increase frequency to hourly service, with all trains serving the full route between San Jose and Sacramento and more service to Roseville and Auburn.
    3. San Joaquin Route: Add additional service frequencies as double tracking is completed in the Valley, with additional trains serving Sacramento.
  • Extend intercity routes within California and Nevada
    1. Extend the Capitol Corridor to include the Sierra Nevada cities, Reno and Sparks, Nevada
    2. Extend the Capitol Corridor to Salinas
    3. Extend the Capitol Corridor north to Chico and Redding
    4. Extend the San Joaquin Corridor south across the Tehachapis through the Antelope Valley cities into Los Angeles with overnight service
    5. Extend the Surfliner Corridor by funding and implementing the planned Coast Daylight train from Los Angeles to downtown San Francisco
  • Expand long distance intercity service
    1. Extend the California Zephyr to Los Angeles overnight via the Coast line
    2. Expand the Southwest Chief with a section from Barstow to Emeryville and/or Sacramento via the San Joaquin Valley
    3. DAILY service and improved on time performance for the Sunset Limited
    4. New daily trains from Tucson and Phoenix to Los Angeles via Fullerton, Riverside, and Palm Springs
    5. Resumption of the Desert Wind service from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Laramie, Denver and Chicago
  • Expansion of commuter rail and light rail service in California and Nevada cities
  • Closely follow the development of the California High Speed Rail Authority project which would have high speed trains running between the Bay Area and Los Angeles-San Diego
